Solar power is a great thing – but you know what they say about too much of a good thing. And California is feeling the burn.
California’s Govornator Arnold Schwarzenegger and Energy Secretary Stephen Chu are among the politicians vying to get California out of the mess the drought has brought on – and by mess, we mean shrinking supplies of drinking water, wildfires and agricultural devastation.
In fact, thanks to greenhouse gases which has led to global warming, scientists warn that sea levels will rise much faster than predicted, and the oceans are growing so acidic, extinction to certain forms of marine life will be inevitable. To help combat this overwhelming problem, Schwarzenegger has asked residents to cut water usage by 20 percent. If things get worse, mandatory water rationing could be enacted in the future. On a national scale, the EPA is working with the federal government to require companies to start disclosing the amount of greenhouse gases they release into the atmosphere.
Reuters reports, “California farmers lost more than $300 million in 2008 and economic losses may accelerate to 10 times that this year as 95,000 people lose their jobs. Farmers will get zero water from the main federal supplier.”
